Flounder Gigging

This is one of the most ancient fishing practices. The spear used for spearfishing is so different from a regular hunting or combat spear that most languages have different names for it. The major difference is that a fishing spear has to have barbs that get stuck in the body of the fish and prevent it from escaping. The spear can be thrown or thrust by hand from the shore, from a boat, or by wading into the water; in some traditional practices a light is used at night, not so much as to blind the fist but to make it stand out clearer in the water.
